Gast & Palz: Episode 32 - Black Komedy

  1. Ashanark here!
In a world where it seems like every new addition to every beloved franchise is a horrible fumble...at least we can count on Skar to be the Sane Man to break things down and have his characters and plots be rational!

Seriously, this is brilliant. There are a few pieces of fiction which I use as examples of wasted potential or contrived storytelling (like Metroid: Other M, Chrono Cross, and now Last Jedi) but the Goku Black arc really takes the cake. Having someone explain in a good-hearted manner just how much of a contrived, ill-conceived, plot-hole-ridden mess of a saga it was is very therapeutic to me. Couple things in particular need to be pointed out:
-- Having Beerus, Korin, Neko-Majin and Puar all hanging out was awesome. All we need is Dr. Brief's cat!
-- Super Cyan. Filipino dub for the win
-- "Why didn't you put abandon Zeno in the future timeline?" followed by the beat panel of Gohan holding up his finger and then going "FUUUUUU" got me SO bad

Once DBS ends and the fanbase has a chance to go back and really think about what they just witnessed, I'm not sure there will be many people who can seriously defend the Goku Black arc. It really is just a pointless mess, pure and simple.

The wait might be long for new episodes of Gast 'n' Palz, but it's always worth it! Thanks, Skar!

    1. Thank you for the comment, Ashanark! Beerus interacting with the other cat characters was something I've always wanted to see in DBS. I thought the saga had potential but it felt like they sacrificed it for the sake of more fan service and a shock value ending that didn't make a lot of sense. I'm waiting for the manga to catch up with the anime so I'd have more panels to use for the next saga. The first half going to cover the preliminary round and recruitment episodes of the anime though since there's a lot more to talk about there :P.

    2. Sure Ashanark, I'm sure the dragon ball fan base will turn their noses up at the black arc once super ends. All because of some plot holes and some parody comic. I'm sure the people who enjoyed the arc will just completely lose all interest because x happened and y didn't. Sure why not lets live in that pure and simple mess of a reality.

    3. I believe you missed the point of his comment. There's a difference between enjoying something and defending it because you thought it was good writing or made sense story-wise. I had fun watching the saga but it was mostly the fan service of seeing Future Trunks again. The story really doesn't hold up very well if you put any thought into the execution, Zamasu's plan, etc or how much effort they went into trying give us the fan service. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I didn't expect this parody to change anyone's opinion of the saga. The parody is meant to point out why I didn't think it was good writing.

    4. The opinion I was trying to express is that some enjoyed the writing. I know this comic is not meant to change opinions. Excuse me if that's how it came off. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions and I'm completely fine with people expressing their opinions over the internet as I do.

    5. No worries, I may have misinterpreted your comment. I enjoyed some of the writing like showing Vegeta's growth since the Cell saga with how he cared for Trunks. I just felt a lot of it including the overall premise of the saga requires the reader to put zero thought into it for it to work.

Dragonball usually had villains with simpler and more straightforward motives but they made sense at least and the villain was doing their best to successfully enact their plan. Zamasu had the most convoluted plan out of any antagonist in the series but it was also the plan with the least likelihood of actually succeeding since he was willing to forgo more effective wishes just to switch bodies with Goku. I get he hated Goku for being a mortal that surpassed the gods but I don't think they ever acknowledged why he was okay with his universe's God of Destruction doing the same thing. I think the concept of a rebellious God has a lot of potential but the fact that Zeno is willing to destroy everything makes it hopeless for any God or Angel to try anything because it would have the same outcome once Zeno finds out. It would've helped if Zamasu at least tried to get rid of Zeno with the Super Dragonballs and it's revealed that it's beyond his power to explain why Zamasu was taking such a huge risk of continuing with his plan and hoping Zeno never notices.

    6. I can agree with you on that. Zamasu's plan is by for the most extreme, but that was one thing I considered a positive. It was nice seeing a villain that wasnt just chaos and destruction for the sake of it. He wasn't the most revolutionary villain but a new one for dragon ball at least. With Zeno being so far removed from the other universes gave it that small chance of success showing just how crazy/stupid Zamasu was for trying to achieve his goals. You make a great point though.

    7. I agree that Zamasu was a new type of villain and that's what I liked about him initially but I just felt he was a little underdeveloped or that his plan was somewhat incomplete. He was willing to kill the other Kaioshin and Gods of Destruction so he clearly didn't agree with how they were doing their jobs. In the grand scheme of things, the Kaioshin, Gods of Destruction, and Angels were basically pawns are under the employment of the Omni-King. I think Zamasu should've had some resentment towards the highest ranking gods for setting up the multiverse this way and/or allowing so many unworthy mortals to exist.

It would be like if Vegeta wanted to take over the Frost Demon empire but his only goal is to kill the soldiers and hope Freeza and King Cold never notice or catch him. He won't get far if he's not able to do anything about the two emperors who are by far the strongest in the empire. There's nothing stopping Freeza and King Cold from eventually killing Vegeta and recruit other soldiers. Same with Zeno and the Grand Priest. If Zamasu can't do anything to get rid of them, they could eventually restore the gods who were killed or hire new ones. I'm not sure how the DBS multiverse was setup but I assume they had some involvement?

    8. To me it seemed Zamasu's main issue was with the supreme Kai's approach to not getting involved with the affairs of mortals. Especially considering there is nothing enforcing that way of handling the universes. When characters like Shin and Old kai take a direct role in trying to defeat Buu by rescuing some of them, giving them power ups and even sacrificing their lives all to get a chance at defeating Buu. Zeno and the grand priest seem just fine with this and the kais and gods of destruction never mentions this as being a bad thing. It's true there is nothing stopping Zeno/the grand priest from replacing the defeated gods, but who was going to alert them about this. Since they hardly ever appear in the other universes only when they want too which seems to be a rarity in of itself. How would they know something is a mock. Hell Zeno seemed like he was before Top was going to destroy multiple universes without notice. Who knows if Zamasu's plan was fully realized maybe the universes who have been run better than ever before leaving Zeno without reason to check up on the other universes.

    9. In the Universe Survival saga, we find out Zeno and/or Grand Priest have some godly cosmic method to scan all the universes and give a mortal ranking. If Zamasu was successful in wiping out one universe, that universe's ranking would likely drop down to zero so the highest two Gods would wonder what happened there. Granted, it didn't seem like any of the Kaioshin or Gods of Destruction knew about this mortal ranking system but I still think it's a glaring problem in Zamasu's plan to just hope that Zeno would never notice.

The fact that Zeno showed up to the Champa saga tournament proves he occasionally watches over the universes. If he showed up to a friendly tournament held between two universes, Zamasu should've realized that committing mass omnicide across the entire multiverse would eventually catch their attention. All the Gods of Destruction and Kaioshin seemed familiar with Zeno so they must've met him before either at a meeting or he visited their universes on separate occasions. At the very least, they could've had Zamasu try to use the Super Dragonballs to get rid of Zeno and Super Shenron tells him that Zeno is beyond his power or that he can't affect Gods against their will.

  3. Excellent again! What a nice lesson we learned at the end... :)

DBS takes a hard blow, but there was one or two for DBM too :)

    2. Yes, about Dabra. I added "or two" in case there was another I didn't spot ;p

  4. I don't get it, what's the point? I've read until Vegeta turns SSJ and I still don't see what's the point. Where is the Komedy? What's all this nonsense?

    1. It's supposed to be parody/silly fanfic continuation of Gast's story from DBM so maybe it would make more sense to start at the beginning. I completed the story up until the Buu saga and I figured why not cover DBS. If you still think it's pointless or stupid then I'm sorry for not doing a better job. Let me know how I could improve it next time :D.

  5. Cool!
    Awesome chapters!

Since you are covering DBS you may DBGT as well, or at least only the tsuful Baby parasiting everyone.
